GOVERNMENT's CASE

Objective extracts from witnesses testifying against Robert Garwood

1-CWO/4 Francis ANTON, US Army; POW 06 JAN 67 - MAR 73.

"I have no knowledge of GARWOOD accepting a position of authority with the camp personnel, except what the Vietnamese told us."

"We were supposed to treat the guards and GARWOOD with respect by nodding... I can say that Bob never, that I can remember, criticized us or anything when we didn't do this."

"There were times when Robert GARWOOD would give aid to the POWs. ... when ... was sick, and eventually died, Bob gave him a can of milk. I'd say that two or three times he brought down an egg for ... or somebody else that was sick."

"He never threatened me with a weapon and we never had to salute him. We weren't allowed to salute because we were criminals."

2 - SFC Isaiah McMILLIAN, US Army; POW 11 MAR 68 - 16 MAR 73.

"PFC GARWOOD told me that he was a driver for some VIP officer and that he had been ambushed on his way back to base camp."

"PFC GARWOOD did some things to help the POW's."

"Sometimes we'd ask GARWOOD for tobacco and he'd give it to us."

3- SFC Robert LEWIS, III, US Army; POW 07 JAN 68 - MAR 73.

"I overheard Robert GARWOOD tell... he did not believe that the Vietnamese were going to let him go..."

"...One night while at Camp Two he brought a chicken to our hootch."

"On some occasions we would persuade him to let us listen to the Voice of America."

"I never saw PFC GARWOOD fire a weapon."

4- SSG Willie A. WATKINS, US Army; POW 09 JAN 68 - NOV 69.

"He'd bring down the radio for us to listen to Radio Hanoi. Sometimes he'd change it to one of the English Broadcasting stations out of Peking, to give us different views of the war. On a couple of other occasions, he'd bring tobacco and candy to us."

"I remember one incident when he brought a chicken down."

5- Mr. David N. HARKER, US Army; POW 08 JAN 68 - 05 MAR 73. Testifying against Garwood.

"PFC GARWOOD brought down a chicken one time. You can interpret it as helping us. ... PFC GARWOOD said 'Here's a chicken. I would like the two drumsticks, I'll be back tomorrow and get them. It's some food for you.' "

"On occasion, PFC GARWOOD at our urging would switch it (the radio) over to the Voice of America. ... when he brought it down it was a big morale booster just to hear somebody's voice."

"The longest we were allowed to listen to an American station was about one minute. Bob was afraid to keep it on a station. He was taking a big risk, and he wanted to stay in our good graces."

"I believe Bob made some type of headstones and put dates on them. I believe Bob made some headstones; at least he said he did..."
