"History Flight" Aims to Help Identify Missing in Action Soldiers

They were missing since World War II and tonight, the identities of 11 servicemen have been determined halfway around the world.

After their bomber went down in 1943. Their remains were found by villagers in Papua New Guinea, near Australia.

Making those identifications can take years, sometimes decades. But there is a local group that raises money to help search, by giving airplane rides.

WBTV's Trent Faris takes us into the wild blue yonder.

If you saw a Yellow Stearman Bi-plane buzzing over your house in Chester this morning, I may have been in the cock pit, and it was all for a good cause.

"History Flight" is a non profit organization that brings aviation history to life.

The group flies restored World War II air planes.

Marc Hightower is one of the pilots and said that the flights range, "Anything from mild to wild."

So of course, I wanted to go for a ride.

Sure barrel rolls, loop de loops, and hammer heads are fun, but the real reason this group travels up and down the East cost 9 months out of the year is for a more important reason.

The Bent Prop Project researches and looks for World War II soldiers and pilots classified as Missing In Action.

And for these pilots to bring any closure to a family of a missing vet is more exciting to them than a barrel roll.

The rides are offered the next two week ends.

The cost is $200.Ê
