World War I veteran turns 107
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- One of the two surviving U.S. veterans of World War I is now 107 years old.
The birthday of Charles Town resident Frank Buckles was recognized by a hometown legislator, Delegate John Doyle, at the state Capitol on Friday.
Buckles, a Missouri native looking for adventure, lied about his age in 1917 to get into the Army. He was shipped overseas but never saw combat.
When he signed up again to fight the Germans in 1941, he was 42 -- and rejected as too old.
But he ended up a prisoner of war: The Japanese captured him while he was on business in the Philippines.
