By: Metroland Durham Region Media Group

OSHAWA -- As Oshawa gears up for Canada Day, a local church is planning a special event to celebrate the freedom Canadians enjoy and reflect on the struggles those in other parts of the world still face.

On Sunday, Community Baptist Church in Oshawa will welcome speaker Audrey Nordmo, a former child prisoner of war.

Now 74, Ms. Nordmo was living in China with her missionary parents, when at age 9, she was captured during a Japanese invasion and imprisoned for four years.

ÒItÕs such a gripping story,Ó says Pastor Gordon Horton, who happens to be Ms. NordmoÕs son. ÒI wanted my congregation to hear about her experiences and be proud of the freedom they have.Ó

Ms. Nordmo will be speaking at Community Baptist Church, 470 Ritson Rd. South in Oshawa, on Sunday, July 1 at 6 p.m.

All are welcome and there is no admission cost. For more information, visit www.cbcofdurham.org.
