Grave of slain Aust soldiers found
A mass grave of Australian soldiers killed in World War I is believed to
have been discovered in northern France.
A scientific survey of a burial site at Fromelles has revealed up to 160
Australians may have been buried there after a battle with the Germans.
Assistant Minister for Defence Bruce Billson says if confirmed, the
discovery will be of great significance.
"It's painting more of a picture, a mystery that's been part of our
military history for generations," he said.
"This most recent set of insights reassures us that this is the right
location.
"There's been many theories about what happened in this area over many
generations."
Mr Billson says more investigation is needed to confirm the finding.
"We are of the view that a further intrusive examination of the area is
warranted to provide further evidence," he said.
"That if there are signs that remains are still in this area, we can then
go back to the French authorities and seek their approval to carry out a
more broad scale examination and excavation of the site."
