Military Prepares To Return Remains Of Frozen Airman

09 March, 2006

HONOLULU -- The remains of a World War II airman will soon be returned to his family, 64 years after his plane disappeared in California, military officials said.

Last October, hikers in the Sierra Nevada mountains discovered frozen human remains and other personal items.

Scientists from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command laboratory at Hickam Air Force Base used DNA to positively identify the remains as those of Aviation Cadet Leo Mustonen, a 22-year-old from Minnesota.

The Department of Defense said on Thursday that Mustonen's remains will be returned to his family soon for burial.
