RELEASE NO. #06-15
May 1, 2006
JPAC TEAMS RETURN FROM VIETNAM
HICKAM AFB, HAWAII Ð The last of seven Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command teams returned recently to Hawaii from a mission in Vietnam.
Recovery Team [RT] TwoÕs assignment started mid-February as part of a JPAC operation to send one Investigation Team, one Research Investigation Team and five RTs to Vietnam to search for unaccounted-for military members from the Vietnam War. The other teams returned March 15.
While typical missions last for 30 days, RT Two remained in Vietnam for an additional 30 days to continue excavation on a site associated with a battle that took place May 12, 1968.
During this battle, several U.S. military observation posts and defensive positions were attacked and overrun by enemy forces. Seven U.S. Army Soldiers remain missing from the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry, 23rd Infantry Division.
RT Two recovered evidence from a site atop a hill in the Quang Nam region, which will now be transferred to the JPAC laboratory for analysis. This mission, the 84th Joint Field Activity, was the fourth mission to this site.
Today, there are still 1,800 unaccounted-for service members missing from the Vietnam War.
