03/03/2005
Da Nang, Mar. 3(VNA) -- A ceremony to repatriate remains believed to be that of American missing in action from the war in Viet Nam was held at Da Nang International Airport on March 3.
The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Viet Nam Office for Seeking Missing Persons (VNOSMP), the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), and the US Embassy in Ha Noi.
At the ceremony, the Vietnamese Government representative handed over three boxes of remains and personal effects that have been examined in Ha Noi. The remains and personal effects will be sent to Hawaii,Ê for further examination.
This was the 95th handover of missing American servicemen's remains since 1973, bringing the total number of repatriated MIA's remains to 829.
The remains and personal effects repatriated this time were the result of the 79th Joint Viet Nam-US search in northern provinces of Viet Nam in October and November in 2004, and were successful largely thanks to local people's efforts.
During the ceremony, the US Government representative expressed his gratitude to the Vietnamese Government and people for their humanitarian policy, good-will and increasingly efficient cooperation.-Enditem
