Britain compensates Gurkha POWs in WWÊII

KATHMANDU - The British government has said it has so far made ex-gratia payments of 10,000 pounds ($19,142) to each of 578 former British Gurkha soldiers who were held prisoners of war by Japan during World War II.

In a statement late Monday, the British Embassy in Kathmandu said the 578th former POW received compensation recently and that there were still a large number of claims to be processed and paid. (Kyodo News)
