"POW
MIA Vigil
Alex Sanz/Eyewitness News
January 16, 2004 - On a winter night people brave the rain and the cold so we
don't forget. They're here remembering Scott Speicher the first American
pilot shot down over Iraq during the first Gulf War. The candlelight vigil
begins on Monument Circle moments after Speicher's family and friends finish
theirs on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol. They're marking the day Speicher
was last seen thirteen years ago.
Judy Brinkley from Rolling Thunder, Chapter One said, "We're here to commemorate
that night and to support the fact that he needs to be accounted for.
The politicians need hear what we're saying and listen and find Scott Speicher."
The U.S. military considered Speicher killed in action. Then his initials
were found scrawled on a prison wall in Baghdad. His status was changed
to missing in action, and then to prisoner of war.
After Saddam Hussein's capture, military crews re-launched their search for
Speicher. They haven't found him and Hussein isn't talking. Brinkley
continued, "Until that day comes and all the questions have been answered
we will not forget Captain Speicher. Let's always keep Captain Speicher
and his family in our prayers." As a weekend of nationwide vigils
come to end the online effort to remember the missing U.S. Navy captain continues.
