US, Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia Strengthen MIA Cooperation

05 August, 2004

Washington (VNA) - The United States and the three countries of Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia have agreed to coordinate efforts to search for the remains of American personnel missing in action (MIA) during the war in Indochina, the US Defence Department announced on Monday.

During a two-day meeting in Cambodia last week, delegates from the four countries agreed to resume high-level trilateral discussions on American personnel reported as missing in the border areas where the US will work with either Viet Nam and Laos, or Viet Nam and Cambodia.

In addition, they also agreed to establish a new mechanism at the expert level to coordinate efforts on these cases. ³Without your cooperation, this mission could not continue,² Jerry Jennings, US deputy assistant secretary of defence for POW/MIA issue, said.

He also expressed gratitude to the three Southeast Asian countries for their help and support.

Since the end of the war in 1975, the United States has accounted for more than 700 Americans reported as missing from the Viet Nam War. More than 1,800 remain unaccounted-for from the war.
