JACKSONVILLE, FL -- A new investigation shows missing Navy pilot Captain Scott Speicher may be dead.
The Washington Times is reporting the U.S. military team looking into Speicher's disappearance has finished its investigation.
Sources close to the mission say teams have found no evidence Speicher could still be alive.
The sources go on to say there's no evidence Speicher was ever held captive at all. Officials think the pilot either died in the crash or very soon afterward.
Senator Bill Nelson is sending his sympathy to Speicher's family. Nelson spoke about the investigation on the Senate floor Thursday. He says he hopes the report is not true, but he also knows the family needs to have some closure.
"The family has been through a trauma like hardly any of us could believe," Nelson said.
Captain Speicher's fighter jet was shot down on the first night of the first Gulf War, in 1991. His status is still officially listed as "missing captured."
Speicher's family has not yet responded to the new claims. Stay with First Coast News and firstcoastnews.com for the latest details in this developing story.
