"S. Korean POW Detained in China After Fleeing NK
SEOUL (Yonhap) _ A South Korean prisoner of war captured by North Korea during the 1950-53 Korean War and detained there until recently has defected from the north only to be arrested by Chinese police, supporters of South Korean War POWs said Wednesday.
The seventy-five-year old POW, identified only by his family name, Shin, fled from North Korea on May 1, but was arrested by the Chinese police in Yenji, Jilin Province, three days later.
``Shin is now in danger of being deported back to North Korea,’’ a spokesman for the POW support group said, adding that he is now imprisoned in a border jail for North Korean defectors. ``South Korean relatives who met with Shin in Yenji have also been deported to South Korea,’’ he added.
Shin was born in Yonggwang County of South Cholla Province, joined the South Korean Army in June 1946 and fought against North Korea during the Korean War.
