U.S. Defense Department officials began on April to search for bodies of U.S. soldiers killed during the Korean War in North Korea.

Equipments needed for the search were transported to the North through the DMZ, a three-mile stretch dividing North and South Korea.

The U.S. and North Korea agreed last year to the U.S.’ five search trips into Unsan, North Pyongan Province, and Chosin Reservoir, South Hamgyeong Province.

In the past 27 searches since 1996, the U.S. and North Korea excavated 108 bodies which were recognized as U.S. soldiers.
