"Speicher Status Change

By Beth Younggren/WCJB TV 20 News

While in Gainesville Friday morning, US Senator Bill Nelson received disappointing news in the search for prisoner of war, Captain Scott Speicher. Senator Nelson has long advocated for the search of the north Florida pilot, which intensified when this gulf war began.

Speicher's plane went down the first night of the 1991 Gulf War. He's the only serviceman listed as killed in action, then missing in action, and two years ago re-classified as prisoner of war.

But now, Nelson says tribesmen in Iraq believe his body is buried in the Iraqi desert. Senator Nelson says he's heartbroken for the family, "But on the other hand the family needs closure, evidence how he died, when and where he's buried."

Those questions have yet to be answered, but the rescue - turned recovery mission will continue in Iraq.
