The 26th annual Evening Series Lectures begins tomorrow with Dr. Mark Grimsley,
author of "The Hard Hand of War," speaking about the "Union Military
Policy Toward Southern Civilians."
Co-sponsored by the The Museum of the Confederacy and the Library of Virginia,
the lecture series continues March 24 and 31. All lectures will be held at 5:30
p.m. at the Library of Virginia auditorium.
On March 24, the featured speaker will be professor Mark E. Neely Jr., winner
of the 1992 Pulitzer Prize in history. His lecture will examine "The Fate
of Civil Liberties in the Confederacy and the Union."
On March 31, Dr. James G. Gillispie and Mauriel Phillips Joslyn will discuss
"The Treatment of Prisoners" in the Civil War. Gillispie, history
instructor at Sampson Community College in North Carolina, is the author of
two recent articles published in North & South magazine. Joslyn wrote "Immortal
Captives: The Story of Six Hundred Confederate Officers and the United States
Prisoner of War Policy."
The speakers will be available to sign their books, some of which will be on
sale at the lectures. Admission to each lecture is $5. For reservations, call
