A former prisoner of war was named vice commander of the Air National Guard's
178th Fighter Wing based in Springfield.
Lt. Col. Mike Roberts, a member of the wing since 2000, was held as a POW from
January to March 1991 after he was shot down over Baghdad in the Persian Gulf
War.
Roberts graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1982 and has been stationed
at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base in South Carolina and Holloman Air Force Base
in New Mexico. He was flight commander of the 401st Tactical Fighter Wing at
Torrejon Air Base in Spain. While serving there, he flew in Operation Desert
Shield and Desert Storm.
"He's a well-respected man, and he'll do a great job," said Lt. Katherine
Arvai, spokeswoman at the National Guard.
Roberts replaces Col. Richard Lohnes, who became commander of the fighter wing
in August.
