CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Extending the thanks of Congress and a grateful nation to the Iraqis Mohammed and Iman for their brave actions against oppression and tyranny in providing to United States forces, at great risk to themselves, information essential for the rescue of Private First Class Jessica Lynch, United States Army, on April 1, 2003.
Whereas during Operation Iraqi Freedom an Iraqi man, identified only as `Mohammed', and his wife `Iman' risked their own lives to help save the life of Private First Class Jessica D. Lynch, United States Army, of Palestine, West Virginia, an American prisoner of war being held and mistreated in an Iraqi hospital;
Whereas on March 23, 2003, Private First Class Lynch, of the Army's 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, was captured by Iraqi paramilitary forces near the city of Nasiriyah, Iraq;
Whereas Private First Class Lynch courageously fought against her attackers and sustained severe injuries;
Whereas according to reports, `Mohammed', having learned that Private First Class Lynch was being held and mistreated at that hospital, walked six miles down `ambush alley', further risking his own life, to offer American forces important information about the whereabouts of Jessica Lynch;
Whereas in the following days, at the request of United States officers, Mohammed made several more risky trips to the hospital, which was full of Iraqi security guards, gathering information on the number of troops and making hand-drawn maps of the building's layout and location;
Whereas Mohammed's wife Iman, an employee at the hospital, provided other crucial details about the building, including the fact a helicopter could land on the roof;
Whereas acting on this information, on April 1, 2003, a Special Operations force of Navy SEALS, Army Rangers, and Air Force special operations personnel, together with forces of the Marine Corps, conducted a daring raid and rescued Private First Class Lynch and recovered the remains of nine other members of the Army who were killed in the line of duty near Nasiriyah;
Whereas Mohammed and Iman acted courageously in the face of daunting obstacles and great danger;
Whereas Mohammed and Iman's courage shows the greatness and compassion that individuals can achieve in the face of tyranny and oppression; and
Whereas the humanitarian actions of Mohammed and Iman serve as an example that underscores the commonality between all people, regardless of racial or religious differences: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That the Congress--
(1) applauds the brave actions of the Iraqis Mohammed and Iman against oppression and tyranny in providing to United States forces, at great risk to themselves, information essential for the rescue of Private First Class Jessica Lynch, United States Army, from Iraqi captivity on April 1, 2003;
(2) holds their actions up to the world as an example of the courage and values all people of the world share in the face of tyranny and oppression; and
(3) recognizes Mohammed and Iman as true friends of the United States, thanks them for their bravery and courage, and extends to them the thanks and best wishes of a grateful Nation."
