U.S. Recovers Suspected Remains of MIAs
Associated Press

TOKYO - Eight sets of remains believed to be that of U.S. soldiers missing in action from the Korean War have been flown from North Korea to Japan, military officials said.

The remains were brought by C-130 military transport aircraft Tuesday from Pyongyang to Yokota Air Base on the outskirts of Tokyo, said U.S. military spokeswoman, 2nd Lt. Jessica Martin.

After a repatriation ceremony, the remains were to be taken to a forensics laboratory on Oahu, Hawaii, for identification.

The remains were recovered from two sites in North Korea.

Some - believed to be those of U.S. Army soldiers from the 7th Infantry Division who fought against Chinese forces in November and December 1950 - were found near the Chosin Reservoir in the northeastern part of the country, the Joint POW-MIA Accounting Command said in a statement last week.

The others were recovered from Unsan County, about 60 miles north of Pyongyang, where members of the Army's 1st Cavalry and 25th Infantry divisions fought communist forces in November 1950, the statement said.

Of the 88,000 U.S. servicemen missing in action from all conflicts, more than 8,100 are from the Korean War, with about 1,100 unaccounted from the Chosin campaigns, JPAC said.
