Shepparton News
This weekend is your last chance to see the two exhibitions currently on display at the Shepparton Art Gallery, The Stolen Years: Australian Prisoners of War and Faces of Eve.
Both finish on August 31.
The Stolen Years: Australian Prisoners of War is a travelling exhibition from the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
It includes paintings, drawings and memorabilia brought back from prisoner of war camps in Europe and Asia, and provides insight into the terrible experience of captivity in war.
The second exhibition Faces of Eve, shows how the Splinter Contemporary Artists have independently researched the theme of Eve, and created expressive and individual artworks in response.
The works include a cross-section of mediums, styles and approaches from a contemporary perspective.
Replacing the current exhibitions will be four new displays Changing Surfaces curated by Shepparton Art Gallery curator Narelle Symes; Game Cube displaying the work of local photographer Rick Connors; Pivot by Sebastian Di Munro; and an exhibit of the gallery's permanent collection.
n On Wednesday, September 3 at 10 am is the next Friends of the Gallery coffee morning at the gallery.
The guest speaker will be well known Newcastle artist Sharon Davson.
Sharon Davson was raised in a country town in south-east Queensland and by the age of 13 she was travelling New Zealand in a concert tour.
In her teens, Sharon began exhibiting and her credentials already included the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.
Sharon spent much of the late 1970s studying Fine Arts and Teaching, and by 1980 she was setting out on a solo journey around Australia which would last three years.
In 2001 the gallery hosted With Gratitude for the Light, a touring survey exhibition of Sharon Davson's work over the last 25 years.
She is a fascinating speaker and at the coffee morning she will talk both about her work and her adventures.
Members are free and non members are $2.
No bookings are necessary, just come along.
n There are still places available in the Glass Slumping workshop with local artist Ade Loe. Being held on Saturday, September 13 from 10 am to 3 pm, participants will be guided through the techniques of glass slumping and shown a new approach to combining different textures of glass into an interesting and original artwork.
There are limited places for this workshop, so book early on 5832 9861 to avoid disappointment.
All materials and a light lunch will be provided, cost is $88.
n Admission to the Shepparton Art Gallery is free and is open seven days a week from 10 am to 4 pm, and public holidays from 1 pm to 4 pm.
The gallery is located in the Eastbank Centre, 70 Welsford St, Shepparton, phone 5832 9861."
