Hearing opens into alleged abuse of prisoners by four US soldiers
(Umm Qasar, Iraq-AP) _ The US military has opened a hearing in Iraq into allegations that four American soldiers abused Iraqi prisoners.
The four accused are US Army reservists.
The incident under investigation is alleged to have occurred while the prisoners were being transported to a prisoner of war camp in the southern port city of Umm Qasar.
The soldiers face possible charges including dereliction of duty, assault and maltreatment of prisoners.
The four are accused of punching and kicking several Iraqis and breaking one man's nose.
The accused have said they acted in self-defense.
An Army spokesman says the hearing will determine if there is enough evidence to go to trial.
