"Team arrives in North to search for remains
A group of U.S. military investigators arrived in Pyeongyang on Saturday to begin operations to recover remains of American servicemen listed as missing in action during the Korean War. Russia's Itar-Tass News Agency reported from Pyeongyang yesterday.
Two search and recovery teams of the U.S. Army Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii were to be dispatched to areas north of Pyeongyang to conduct their operations, Larry Greer, a spokesman at the POW/MIA office at the Pentagon, told the JoongAng Daily earlier this month. The teams will stay in the North until Oct. 28.
The United States and North Korea have conducted joint operations to recover remains of U.S. soldiers in the North since 1996. Through last year, 150 sets of remains have been found; 5,100 U.S. troops still officially missing probably died in the North.
