Several small stories and notes.
Playwright George Axelrod passed away at the age of 81. Axelrod wrote the screenplay for the Cold War drama, The Manchurian Candidate. A former 3-year Army Signal Corps veteran, Axelrod's treatment in 1962 of author Richard Condon's book by the same name is considred his best achievement. The film was shelved immediately after the 1963 Kennedy assassination and languished on studio shelves until 1987 when its re-release catapulted it to classic status.
The USPS will offer a new stamp commemorating the Korean War Armistice and Memorial in Washington, DC. First day of issue is 27 JULY 03, the anniversary of the armistice and the ceremony will take place at the memorial. The Memorial will also observe its 8 year anniversary the same day, having been dedicated 27 JULY 95.
John W. Alli of Catonsville, Md, took the photograph used on the stamp just before a snowstorm in January 1996. Alli, who served two tours of duty in the Persian Gulf as a Marine Corps second lieutenant, is now a commercial airline pilot and a lieutenant colonel aviator in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.
