"Lance P. Sijan awards
Four Hill airmen recently received the base-level Lance P. Sijan award, recognizing their distinguished leadership efforts and abilities.
They are Technical Sgt. Michael Pitts of the 775th Civil Engineering Squadron NCO category; Master Sgt. Steven Green, Air-to-Surface Munitions Directorate senior enlisted category; Capt. Chris Boring, 649th Combat Logistics Support Squadron junior officer category; and Maj. Patrick Kumashiro, 651st Munitions Squadron senior officer category.
Their nominations have been forwarded to Air Force Materiel Command headquarters for consideration.
The award, created in 1981, is named in honor of the first Air Force Academy graduate to receive the Medal of Honor. Sijan was shot down over Vietnam Nov. 9, 1967 and successfully evaded capture for 45 days despite suffering severe injuries. He later died from his injuries while in a Vietnamese prisoner-of-war camp. Sijan was presented the Medal of Honor posthumously for his heroism as a POW.
