"POW Honored By NAACP
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Former prisoner of war Shoshana Johnson took the stage in Miami Beach Wednesday night to accept a civilian award from the NAACP.
Johnson was one of five soldiers captured in an ambush near Nasiriya during the Iraqi war. She wore her full dress uniform and a blue walking cast on her right leg to the ceremony held at the Fountainbleu Hotel.
Johnson said she expects to make a full recovery from her injuries received after she was shot in both ankles during the March 23 ambush.
"That doesn't stop me," said Johnson, referring to her injury. "I'm still a soldier. I've been back to work and everything like that, and I expect to make a full recovery."
Johnson, 30, of El Paso, already has received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Prisoner of War Medal.
Johnson said she had spent some time in Miami shopping with her aunt, who lives in Wellington in Palm Beach County to the north.
"I lost a little weight. I want new clothes and I bought some new shoes -- I only get to wear one foot though," she said.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is holding its 94th annual convention in Miami Beach through Friday.
