"WWII pilot finally comes home
Family, friends plan funeral
By Randy Conat
Owosso (05/16/03)-- He left Owosso nearly 60 years ago. This afternoon he's returning. Lt. Carl Hoenshell was flying a P38 airplane when he was shot down over Bulgaria in 1944.
Lt. Hoenshell was listed as missing in action for 55 years. But after a lot of research, Hoenshell's niece found the crash site in 1998.
U-S Army experts combed the scene and found airplane parts, a zipper, a wedding ring and Hoenshell's remains.
The remains have been kept in a lab in Hawaii, but this afternoon they are being flown to Owosso on an Army helicopter where a funeral and military burial service are planned.
During the funeral it's expected the Lt. Hoenshell will posthumously be awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the nations second highest medal for bravery. ABC12's Randy Conat spoke with Lt. Hoenshell's widow in January.
"It's just the satisfaction of knowing we finally found him and what happened. Because everyday you get up thinking about this person that you loved," said Ruth Weeks, Hoenshell's widow.
The visitation for Lt. Carl Hoenshell will be at the Nelson-House Funeral Home in Owosso on May 24th 2pm- 8pm. The funeral will also be at the Nelson-House Funeral Home May 25th at 2pm.
Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Owosso.
