REP. STRAUGHN CALLS FOR ACTION
TO INSTALL POW/MIA FLAG IN CAPITOL

PHOENIX (APRIL 8, 2003) – Representative Wally Straughn (District 15, Phoenix) and other Democratic Legislators joined forces with military veterans groups’ representatives at a press conference today to pressure House Speaker Jake Flake to allow the installation of POW/MIA flag on the Floor of the House of Representatives.

Rep. Straughn told the assembled veterans and other officials that he had been trying to arrange an meeting with Speaker Flake for the past three weeks to discuss having the flag installed on the House Floor.

“This flag was first designed and flown by National League of Families in 1971. It became the first flag, other than the national flag,  to fly over the White House at the National POW/MIA Recognition Day and was permanently installed in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda by act of Congress  in 1990,” Rep. Straughn said.

He added, “I know Speaker Flake is a staunch supporter of our efforts in Iraq and our men and women who are sacrificing so much in defense of freedom. That’s why I can’t understand why I can’t have a meeting with him to discuss installing this flag on the Floor in honor of our prisoners of war and those missing in action.”
