"NBC News: Investigators say Speicher is not alive in Iraq
JACKSONVILLE, FL -- NBC News has reported that investigators have all but concluded that missing Navy pilot Scott Speicher of Jacksonville is dead. Speicher's jet went down during the first night of the first Gulf War 12 years ago.
DNA samples from hair in the drain of a Baghdad prison cell do not match Speicher. Now, investigators say they have found nothing in Iraqi documents to suggest that Speicher was taken prisoner or is alive.
Military officials say Iraqi sources who claimed Speicher was alive and in custody were not credible. Still, an attorney for the Speicher family says the search for Scott Speicher should not end.
"Whether he's alive or dead, we left him there and we need to bring that to a conclusion," said Cindy Laquidara, attorney.
U.S. military officials vow the case will stay open until they figure out what happened.
