"507th Widow Speaks Out
"I think it was April 4th when they came and told me that they had identified his body. I'm not the same anymore. There's a great big hole in my heart, and in my life." says Stacy Walters.
It's hole that may never be filled. Stacy, had only called Sgt. Donald Walters her husband for a little over a year.
"He was my best friend. He said, one of these days I'm gonna put a real wedding ring on your hand." says Walters.
That he did. Only months later, Donald went to war, serving as a member of the 507th Maintaince Company. Stacy remembers well, the day her husbands company came under attack.
"They were talking about the ambush. We kept wondering, where's Don? What has happened to him? Is he ok? Around midnight that night a Major and a Chaplin came knocking on the door, and they told me he was missing in action."
Donald would be one of nine soldiers from the 507th, killed in action near Nasiriyah Iraq. He was given the purple heart, and the bronze star for bravery in action. Though the details of what happened to Walters are sketchy at best.
"We don't know if he was trying to get into another truck. We don't know if someone was trying to help him. If he was running. We don't know anything." says Walters.
That little information, Stacy learned this week from government officials, but she says it isn't good enough. As she waits for more answers to come, Stacy continues to wear her wedding band as a symbol of her undying love. A love, she hopes to pass on to their daughter.
"He's not gonna get to watch his daughter grow up. She has her daddy's smile." says Walters.
