"PoW sculpture at show
Students at a Black Country college are aiming to make an impact with their latest exhibition of art and design work.
Student Amandeep Bansal studies the sculpture based on Jack Sharpe
The end of year show by fledgling artists and designers entitled Impact opened to the public yesterday and will run until June 18, weekdays only between 10am and 8pm.
It is being staged at Dudley College, in The Broadway, and includes art, graphics, media, sculpture, ceramics, fashion, textiles, glass, upholstery, soft furnishing, 3D and interior design.
One of the highlights is a sculpture of Prisoner of War Jack Sharpe, who was born in Leicester in 1914 and died in 2002. It has been created by mature student Tony Brett.
In 1945 PoW Jack was liberated from Outram Jail in Singapore, where he was the longest surviving prisoner.
The image of his emaciated body taken on the day he was liberated hangs on the wall of London's Imperial War Museum and The New Walk Museum in Leicester. It was from this picture that Tony took his inspiration.
Head of the sculpture department at the college, Andy Perks, said that Tony always chose characters as his subjects and described the student as very talented.
