"New Evidence Could Shed Light On Speicher's Fate

Ledger Contains POW List, Includes Speicher's Name
NBC 6 News Team

NBC News has learned that the U.S. military in Iraq has uncovered new evidence that could shed some light on what happened to a Florida Navy Pilot who disappeared after his plane was shot down in the early hours of the 1991 Gulf War.

U.S. officials told NBC News military officials have recovered a 90-page Iraqi document on prisoners of war held by Iraq, which includes Scott Speicher's name.

It was not clear whether the document contains any dates or places where Speicher may have been.

Speicher was presumed dead for years after the war, though his body was never recovered. The Bill Clinton administration reclassified him as missing in action after new evidence surfaced allegedly indicating that he survived the initial crash and may have been taken prisoner by Iraqi soldiers. Florida Sen. Bill Nelson has traveled to Iraq and has been leading congressional efforts to discover exactly what happened to Speicher, and whether he could still be alive.

Government officials stressed that U.S. analysts are still trying to determine the meaning of the document, and they cautioned that it in no way provides evidence that Speicher is alive, or was even held as an Iraqi POW.

The officials report the document is dated January 2003 -- leading to the possibility it was hastily prepared by Iraqis trying to create an accurate record of POW's once held by Iraq, or perhaps a falsified document intended to mislead U.S. investigators.

Despite the discovery, American officials report there is still no solid evidence that Speicher is still alive, or that he was ever held as a POW.
