"Talks in Bangkok on war remains recovery
BANGKOK (AFP) - The United States and North Korea will hold talks in the Thai capital this week on recovering remains of American soldiers missing in action from the Korean War, a US embassy spokesman said Tuesday.
"There will be talks with the Korean People's Army and the US government beginning Thursday. The talks will be about the recovering of American soldiers missing in action from the Korean War," the spokesman said.
"These discussions between the US and North Korea have happened in the past here in Bangkok. This is another in a series of similar talks," he said.
The spokesman described the discussions as "private" and declined to comment on the make-up of the delegation and the expected length of the talks.
The two countries last held talks on the issue here in June 2002, with three days of discussions resulting in an agreement on new plans to recover soldiers' remains.
During those talks, the US side was led by deputy assistant secretary of defense for POW/missing personnel affairs Jerry Jennings while Pyongyang's delegation was headed by Korean People's Army Senior Colonel Pak Rim Su.
More than 8,100 American servicemen are missing in action from the 1950-53 Korean War, with another 80,000 missing in action from other conflicts.
