"Memorial to be held for Yeend

Air Force captain's remains identified 35 years after he was shot down over Laos

Staff Report

A memorial service for Air Force Capt. Richard C. Yeend Jr. of Mobile will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Lower Alabama Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Battleship Memorial Park.

Yeend's remains were identified about two months ago -- 35 years after he was listed as missing in action when his helicopter was shot down over Laos. He was a graduate of McGill Institute in Mobile and Auburn University.

The featured speaker at the service will be retired Navy Rear Adm. Jeremiah Denton of Mobile who endured seven years and seven months as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. Denton was a leader of other POWs in Hanoi and later became a U.S. senator from Alabama.

Yeend was recently buried in a private family ceremony in Mobile, according to his brother, Tom Yeend.

The memorial service is being sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans of America chapters in Mobile and Baldwin counties.
