POW search continues; Unit to check local sites

KUWAIT CITY : Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah has formed a special unit to search for the remains of Kuwaiti POWs in mass graves in various areas in Kuwait including a secondary school in Rowdah believed to have been the burial ground of over 12 POWs. Other areas include Salmi, Nuwaiseeb, Riqqah and South Surra.

Sources told the Arab Times, Monday, another location in Kuwait, near its northern border with Iraq, is believed to hold the remains of six Kuwaiti women who were kidnapped by Iraqi soldiers during the 1990-1991 Iraqi occupation. "Allied forces found and buried the dead bodies of the six women naked in a trench which was used by Iraqis on their withdrawal from Kuwait in 1991. The forces, however, rescued one woman, who was found in the trench in critical condition," said the sources.

Mohammed Al-Shibani, a senior official at Kuwait Municipality, says there are many mass graves in Kuwait. He added he informed the search team last month about the presence of these graves in various areas including Salmi, Nuwaiseeb and South Surra.

Al-Shibani said a Jordanian man witnessed the burial of 12 bodies at a secondary school in Rowdah during the occupation. He also expected the team to find other mass graves in Rabiya.

He said some Qatari soldiers, who participated with allied forces in the Kuwait liberation war, found the six naked dead bodies of Kuwaiti women in one of the trenches near the Kuwait-Iraq border, on their entry into the country. "A seventh woman was found naked and in critical condition in the trench," Al-Shibani added.

Al-Shibani urged the search team to meet with Qatari soldiers, who reported these mass graves, and the Jordanian witness to obtain accurate information on the fate of some POWs.
