"Reunion set for USS Houston shipmates
The USS Houston Association (CA-30 and CL-81) will hold its 2003 reunion Oct. 1-5 in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Shipmates may write Donna Rogers for more information: 3949 Little John Drive, York, Pa., 17404 or e-mail Donnakenr@cs.com.
In 1942, the cruiser (CA-30) was employed in the struggle against Japan's East Indies offensive, according to the association. The ship took part in the Battle of the Java Sea and later was sunk near the Sunda Strait.
Of the more than 1,000 men on the ship, 368 survived and were placed in prisoner of war camps in Southeast Asia. The USS Houston (CL-81) was launched in June 1943.
