"Lawmaker Wants POW-MIA Flag Permanently Displayed
PITTSBURGH -- A POW-MIA flag is a symbol of remembrance of brave men and women lost or captured in combat.
Now, WTAE's Shiba Russell reports that there is a push to make it a permanent part of the political landscape.
State Rep. Jeff Habay, a Shaler Democrat, wants a new law requiring the flag to be flown at all times at government buildings, not just on certain holidays at federal buildings.
Veterans groups have spent years fighting for such a law, Russell reports.
"The American public right now is very high on this, but the American public has a short memory and it has been proven over the years," said Joe Iacono, of Vietnam Veterans Inc. "Unless you remind them that there is an issue out there, they forget.
"The flag is one method that is used to remind people that, yes, there are still people missing. We have servicemen missing."
State law only requires the POW-MIA flag to be flown at state office buildings in Pittsburgh and three other Pennsylvania cities.
While county and state government buildings are not required to display it, Russell did spot the flag at the City-County Building in downtown Pittsburgh.
