DAVID CRARY, Associated Press Writer Sunday, April 13, 2003
Six or seven U.S. troops listed as missing in Iraq have been found alive and in good condition, the U.S. commander of the war said Sunday.
Gen. Tommy Franks said he had been reluctant to release the information because he was unsure whether the service members were among the five U.S. personnel previously listed as missing or the seven listed as POWs.
"I know they're in good shape." Franks told CNN.
Pentagon officials have committed to tracking down 12 soldiers still missing or captured since the spectacular rescue of Pfc. Jessica Lynch on April 1, but until Franks' revelation, there appeared to be no leads.
The news about the missing soldiers came as a Marine task force closed in on Tikrit, the hometown of Saddam Hussein and last major bastion of his loyalists. The first TV news footage of Tikrit indicated its outer defenses had been weakened, but the CNN crew fled after coming under fire. "
News reports state the Americans are in good shape and under US control.
