"WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) - Meeting for the first time since the start of military action in Iraq, several former World War II prisoners of war placed their hands on their hearts Thursday morning as George Mayza read the POW Pledge of Allegiance.

Mayza, 85, read slowly and deliberately, becoming emotional near the end.

"I am an ex-prisoner of war. Take nothing more from me," he read.

Captured in 1942, the Weatherly man spent more than two years as a POW before the Russians liberated him near Berlin.

The former World War II prisoners gathered at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center on Thursday. Most attend the meetings twice a month.

The former POWs, now in their 70s, 80s and 90s, offered advice to the newest generation of captured soldiers

"You have to adapt and adapt damn quick," said Edward Maguire. "You don't want to collaborate with them, but by God, do what you're told." "
