"Captured Israeli airman's last letter lost in shuttle crash

Jerusalem-AP -- Among the items lost in the space shuttle Columbia disaster: a letter from an Israeli air force navigator captured in Lebanon in 1986.
It was carried into space by Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon (ee-LAHN' rah-MOHN') to bring public attention to the case of Ron Arad, who was captured in 1986 after his plane went down over southern Lebanon.

In 1987, Arad's captors passed on a picture and letters he wrote to his wife and to the public, asking for help in arranging his release. Nothing has been heard from Arad since.

The letter has not been found.

Ramon also served in Israel's air force and was the Jewish state's first astronaut. Arad's brother said Ramon intended to read the letter from space but changed his mind.
