"MIA airman Iraq-Kuwait topic
BAGHDAD - An American pilot shot down in the Persian Gulf War has been added to the list of 600 missing persons whose whereabouts are being discussed in renewed talks between Iraq and Kuwait, a United Nations envoy said yesterday.
F-18 pilot Michael Speicher was lost when his jet was shot down in Iraq on the first night of a U.S.-led attack to end Iraq's occupation of Kuwait on Jan. 17, 1991.
Two years ago, the United States listed Speicher, of Jacksonville, Fla., as missing in action and asked Baghdad for information about him. He had previously been presumed dead.
Intelligence from recent defectors and analysis of the wreckage of Speicher's plane and flight suit indicate he might be alive, said Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.).
The UN envoy, Uli Vorontsov of Russia, confirmed the case of the missing Navy pilot is covered by the mandate of the talks.
