"390 renaming honors 87th

Democrat and Chronicle

(October 6, 2002) — A World War II Army division that fought in the Battle of the Bulge is seeking members and their families or survivors for a ceremony honoring them.

The ceremony will be held Oct. 19 for the renaming of a section of Interstate 390 from Henrietta through Avon, Livingston County. Signs honoring the 87th Infantry Division of Gen. George Patton’s Third Army will be dedicated at a parking area at the intersection of routes 15 and 251, near I-390.

The “Golden Acorn” division, composed mostly of men from New York and Pennsylvania, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, the longest of the war. It also captured Koblenz, Germany, among many other cities and towns; liberated concentration, slave labor and prisoner of war camps; and took 63,338 prisoners.

For information, call Mitchell Kaidy, (585) 424-4746, or Jack Foy, (585) 663-6913.
