"BEE STAFF REPORTS

Former Modesto resident Robert Heer has received a Purple Heart medal stemming from his military service in World War II.

Heer, who now lives in Sequim, Wash., received the honor under a 1996 federal law extending the Purple Heart to service members who were killed or injured while prisoners of war.

Heer, originally from Iowa, suffered two fractured vertebrae during a caning by a Japanese sergeant at a POW camp on Formosa.

He was serving with the Army Air Corps when he was taken prisoner in the Philippines in May 1942. He was liberated in August 1945.

Heer served in the Air Force until 1965 and earned an associate's degree from Modesto Junior College in 1963 while stationed at Castle Air Force Base in Atwater.

He lived in Modesto from 1971 to 1990, working for the Postal Service and Jensen's Van & Storage.

Washington Sen. Patty Murray presented the Purple Heart to Heer and his wife, Karen, in Seattle on Aug. 16.
