IN THE PRESS -
"Speicher Bill OK'd
Senate Bill 1339, also known as the Speicher Bill, passed the Senate yesterday by unanimous vote. The amendment says any person who provides information leading to the successful recovery or release of a prisoner of war or other personnel listed as missing in action will be granted political asylum in the United States.
The bill was introduced in August 2001 and has gained momentum recently as veterans groups and members of Jacksonville's Free Scott Speicher organization lobbied for its approval.
Speicher, a Navy pilot from Jacksonville, was shot down over Iraq in the first day of the Persian Gulf War. He is listed as missing in action.
