"Run for the Wall roars through King City
May 22 2002 12:00AM

“Smoke” is the road name of an 84-year-old World War II veteran, one of the more than 460 motorcyclists headed for the nation’s capital in the annual Run for the Wall this month.

“His younger brother was killed in Vietnam and is buried in Arlington,” said Jean Domingez of Mt. Vernon, state coordinator of the event that passed through Mt. Vernon on Tuesday. “He always leaves the group to find his brother’s grave.”

“He (stands) there in his black leathers saluting his brother’s monument. It’s truly rather ghostly, actually,” she said. “I understand why he’s there.”
Run for the Wall — the Vietnam Memorial Wall — is meant “to draw awareness to the POW/MIA situation,” Domingez said.

“Not just the Vietnam War but all wars ... to make sure they are not forgotten,” she said. This year’s run is No. 14, she said.

Most of the motorcyclists are Vietnam vets or of that era, but there are some World War II and Korean War veterans participating as well, Domingez said.
The motorcycle contingent paraded down Broadway to state Route 37 and south to Interstate 64 out of town about 2 p.m. Tuesday. A small group of the motorcyclists stayed in town while one of the bike riders was making repairs.
