"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush signed a proclamation Thursday making April 9, 2002, Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day.

"I call upon all the people of the United States to join me in remembering former American prisoners of war by honoring the memory of their sacrifices," the president said in the proclamation released by the White House in written form.

The president also called on federal, state and local government officials and private organizations to observe the day with ceremonies and activities. "
