Long-time Vietnam POW to speak
Man imprisoned for 62 months

AMERICUS, Ga. - Retired U.S. Army Col. Benjamin Purcell, who was held as a prisoner of war in Vietnam for 62 months, will speak during the Eighth District Georgia History Day Contest program at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus on March 22.

Purcell, a Georgia native who was held in solitary confinement for 58 months, was a passenger on a helicopter that was shot down in Vietnam in 1968 when he was taken prisoner. He was awarded the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star and a Purple Heart during his 30-year military career.

He was the senior Army officer held as a POW in Vietnam.

His address will be delivered at 1 p.m. at the university's fine arts theater.

His appearance is supported by a grant from the Georgia Humanities Council. History Day and Purcell's presentation are open to the public.
