Re: Father, Son Reunited After 40 Years

Date: January 07, 2002

"Father, Son Reunited After 40 Years
It was an emotional reunion this weekend when a father and son met for the first time in 40 years.

Luis Velez Sr. (pictured, right with his son) was a political prisoner in Cuba when he sent his 8-year-old son to America in the 1950s. Velez Jr. and his dad lost touch as the years went by.

As the younger Velez grew up, he went to the Vietnam War, where his father thought he had died.

But his sister never gave up hope and searched for him endlessly. It paid off.

"When she calls me and she says are you so and so, and was this your grandmother's name and what was your grandfather's name, this and that, and I'm thinking my God another telemarketer, and in the background, I could hear her tell (her husband), 'I found my brother,'" Velez Jr. said.

Not only did Velez Jr. see his father again, but he found a family he never knew he had."
