HAMPTON -- Clarence L. Kinser, 82, a survivor of the Bataan Death March, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at his home. He was born in Norton, Va., on June 2, 1920, and had lived in Hampton for the past 37 years.
Mr. Kinser joined the United States Army in 1939, serving in the Air Corps and later transferred to the United States Air Force. He served in the military during World War II and was held as a Prisoner of War by the Japanese for 42 months. Mr. Kinser also survived the Bataan Death March, a forced march of about 65 miles to prison camps, which took place in the Philippines in April 1942. Many of the prisoners on this march died of disease or mistreatment.
Mr. Kinser retired from the Air Force in 1969, with the rank of senior master sergeant. Mr. Kinser was a member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War, Inc., James L. Hale Chapter, and was also a member of the American Legion, Post 0031, Hampton. He was of the Protestant faith.
Mr. Kinser was preceded in death by his parents, William B. and Virgie Walden Kinser, two brothers, James "Jim" Kinser and Ray Kinser, and a half-brother, William Kinser.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Lunsford Kinser of Hampton; two daughters, Patricia Kinser of Hampton, and Amy Littleton of Manchester, Conn.; two sons, William Kinser of Dana Point, Calif., and Michael Kinser of Cary, N.C.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Stewart of St. Paul, Va., and Lois Farmer of Norton, Va.; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held noon Monday, Dec. 30, at the Carty Funeral Home Chapel by Ray Jones. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery, Norton, Va. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral. Military rites at the cemetery.
