Re: DOD Bills Family For MIA Remains Return
Date: June 20, 2001
You can't make stuff like this up... leave it to the red tape brigade to add insult to injury...
"Family Gets $700 Bill For Shipping Vet's Body
The family of a Vietnam veteran is upset after receiving a $700 bill.
For 34 years, the Canfield, Ohio, family didn't know what happened to a relative -- Jerry Degnan -- during the Vietnam war, NewsChannel5 reports.
Degnan was killed in a helicopter crash over South Vietnam in 1967. He wasn't identified, however, until 1999.
Army officials say that because Degnan worked for a military contractor that his employer should pay for the shipping, but the company that employed Degnan went out of business years ago.
The Army is trying to check the burial arrangements in the old contract."
AII POW-MIA NOTE: DOD lists the loss, recovery and ID dates for Jerry Degnan as:
DATE OF INCIDENT: 1967/08/09
DATE RETURNED: 1967/08/09
REMAINS ID DATE: 2001/04/13
