"Vietnam Turns Over Presumed Remains

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) - Vietnam has handed over to U.S. officials what are believed to be the remains of four U.S. servicemen killed during the Vietnam War, reports in the state-controlled press said Friday.

The remains were discovered by teams from both countries during joint search operations held last November. It was the 63rd such mission since the United States in the early 1990s set up a branch in Hanoi of its Joint Task Force-Full Accounting Office, the U.S. government agency in charge of the search for America's missing in action.

Representatives from the Vietnam Office for Seeking Missing Personnel, its counterpart organization, turned over the latest sets of remains on Thursday.

Since 1973, the remains of 591 American servicemen formerly listed as unaccounted for have been identified and returned to their families. There are 1,992 Americans still unaccounted for from the war in Southeast Asia, including 1,498 in Vietnam.

The search to recover the remains of American soldiers from the Vietnam War remains a top priority for the United States. During President Clinton's historic trip to Vietnam last November, he visited a crash site where recovery operations were underway."
